Abstract: After years of research and health promoting activities/programs, patients’ engagement in health behaviors (e.g., medication adherence, exercise, diet) continues to be problematically low. Why do patients seem to resist making healthy changes? What can health professionals do about it? This presentation will involve a discussion of these and other questions and offer potential solutions for "keeping it real."

Research Interests: Dr. Carolyn Brown research interests involve understanding cultural and social elements that may impact both quality of care and therapeutic outcomes of patients with chronic illnesses, particularly ethnic minority patients who experience a disproportionate burden of poor health. Extant research indicates that many patients simultaneously use both the formal and informal health care systems. As a result, her research program focuses on patients' treatment decisions, particularly as it relates to use of prescribed medications and complementary and alternative treatment practices. Additional research interests include patient satisfaction with pharmacy care services and pharmaceutical education of ethnic minoritie.
