About the Camp

""

The primary purpose for the Longhorn Nursing Immersion Summer Camp is to introduce teens to the healthcare profession by increasing their knowledge and understanding in the field of nursing. The camp provides high school students with information about nursing and the requirements of becoming a registered nurse. The skills offered included in the camp are patient assessment, electrocardiogram (EKG) readings, patient bedside skills, giving oral and intramuscular injection (IM) medication, using Electronic Health Record (EHR) Tutor, IV insertion, maternity and skills escape room simulations, caring for a newborn patient, feeding tube insertion on pediatric patients, as well as a disaster drill. The week will combine additional learning and social activities designed to foster a sense of community in nursing.

Daily Activities:

  • Learn more about nursing from the UT Austin School of Nursing faculty and current students.
  • Explore nursing skills such as assessing patients, vital signs, and using EHR Charts.
  • Interact with human patient simulators, virtual reality, and participate in nursing skills escape rooms.
  • Visit a local hospital and clinic.
  • Complete an American Heart Association CPR and First Aid course.
  • Gain insight into The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing Program.

Camp Rules and Regulations

Important Items to Know (Arrival and Departure Policies, Parking, Medication Policy, and Meal Plan)
""

Camps are day camps only. No overnight accommodations are available.

Arrival and departure must be arranged by the participants. Mandatory arrival area and departure is located in Lot 118 (red section on the map - corner of MLK and IH35 access road) next to the Erwin Center. Camp counselors and campers will walk to the Nursing School together as a group when all campers are accounted for.

Departure Policy: Only those listed on the camp registration can claim their child. If a family member or neighbor other than the parent is allowed to pick up the camper, this name and information must be listed on the registration prior to the beginning of camp. Parent must show ID to camp counselor upon departure before camper can be released from camp.

Self-Driver: Parking is available for a fee (validation will not be provided) in Trinity Garage (TRGor Health Center Garage (HCG), both located on Trinity St. View parking garages at UT Austin

Medication Policy: Please read this policy thoroughly on the camp registration. If campers arrive on campus with medication not listed on their registration and is not logged in properly, a parent will be called and the camper will be removed from camp permanently – no refunds will be provided.

Meal Plan: Campers will be provided morning snacks, lunch, and beverages. Due to the level of immersion our campers will be involved in, it’s imperative that the camper eat a healthy/hearty breakfast to decrease the chances of feeling faint. Most high-fidelity nursing skills will take place after lunch, but campers will be introduced to medical terminology and supplies earlier in the day.

Sponsors

Thank you in advance for your consideration to sponsor the 2024 Longhorn Nursing Immersion Summer Camp. Your donation is extremely important and greatly appreciated.

Many families in our community are not able to cover the cost of camp tuition ($500.00) for their student. To provide a low-to-no cost tuition option for low-income students, we are asking for your support to meet our fundraising goal of $2,500. Scholarship

The Longhorn Nursing Immersion Summer Camp seeks contributions from our sponsors to offer a limited number of summer camp scholarships each year.

Scholarships (full and partial) are awarded based on need, availability of funds, and camper aspirations of becoming a future nurse/healthcare professional. Scholarships are limited and only partial tuition may be awarded to the camper based on need. We encourage all applicants to search out additional payment options (grandparents, family members, and friends) to cover the remainder of tuition if only partial tuition is covered.

The Scholarship Application for the  Longhorn Nursing Immersion Summer Camp is now closed.
