Linda Murphy is currently a Clinical Instructor in Public Health Nursing at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin, School of Nursing. Ms. Murphy has been a registered nurse since 1971 and has worked in public health, intensive care, rehabilitation, and home health nursing.

Ms. Murphy started her career as a staff nurse at Brackenridge Intensive Care. Switching to a community setting, she worked at a residential school for female adolescents followed by her first public health nursing position at the Austin/Travis County Health Department. Next, she worked at the Austin State School on an interdisciplinary team, serving a five county catchment area that provided assessments of adults with developmental needs. After moving to the northwest in 1978, she held several public health nursing positions: WIC coordinator at the Coos County Health Department and home health agency nurse for the public health department in Medford, OR and for Hillhaven, a private home health agency in Redding, CA.

While going to graduate school at Whitworth College in Spokane, WA she became the Spokane County Head Start Health Manager and remained in that position for nine years.  Returning to Texas in 1993, she returned to work for the Austin/Travis County Health Department, running a nurse managed clinic in a local housing authority project. There she recruited UT at Austin School of Nursing faculty to place students at the clinic for their practicum experiences. Thus, her connection with the School of Nursing began. Shortly after the UT School of Nursing Children’s Wellness Center (CWC) opened in 1996, a grant from the St. David’s Community Health Foundation became available to fund a public health nurse for the CWC. She worked in that position for nine years. She switched from this UT staff position to her current UT clinical faculty position in 2006.

Ms. Murphy is a member of the American Nurses Association, Association of Community Health Nurse Educators, and Sigma Theta Tau. She serves on the Del Valle Independent School District and the East Austin College Prep Academy School Health Advisory Councils and the University of Texas Elementary Education Council and is a member of the Montopolis Community and Business Leader group.
