Dolores V. Sands, PhD, RN, FAAN | Dean Emerita

Dr. Sands received her BSN and MSN degrees from Wayne State University and her Ph.D. in higher education/administration from Arizona State University. After her appointment as director of the Graduate Program in Nursing Administration, she also was acting dean, assistant dean for research and resources, and assistant dean for the baccalaureate program at Arizona State. From 1984-1989 she was professor and director of the Center for Health Care Research and Evaluation at The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing until she was appointed dean in 1989. The Center for Healthcare Research and Evaluation later became the Cain Center for Nursing Research in recognition of a $5 million endowment from Gordon and Mary Cain. During her 20 years as dean, she garnered over $16 million in permanent endowments for the school, including the Cain endowment that also endowed a $1 million Chair in her name. She retired in 2009 and is the first dean emerita at The University.
