Dr. Lisa Doggett, director of the School of Nursing Family Wellness Center, was recently interviewed by KUT public radio station. The center, a primary care facility which provides medical care to low-income, uninsured residents of Austin and Travis County, was established in 2007. Doggett took the reporter on a tour of the center's exam rooms, counseling areas and laboratory and discussed the community's current health care situation. She pointed out that the center provides desperately needed health care to hundreds of Travis County residents who are without private insurance. By filling these needs, the center also helps keep people out of emergency rooms, where care is far more expensive.
The School of Nursing also operates the Children's Wellness Center, a school-based health clinic created in partnership with the Del Valle Independent School District. The children and families served by the clinic are predominantly Hispanic, low-income and medically underserved.
