Beth has worked in many departments in the medical field for the past 23 years. She started as a nurse assistant in 1988 volunteering in a local hospital in her hometown in the Rio Grande Valley and with the local red cross during hurricane seasons taking vital signs & assisting the nurse in charge in the hurricane shelters. After moving to Austin she attended Austin Community College part-time from 1994-1997, she became an Emergency Medical Technician and was a pre-nursing student as well as earning a Medical Billing & Coding certificate. In 2003, Beth joined an Ob/Gyn office as an office manager & administrator for 4 years where she learned other aspects of a medical office including assisting one of the physician she worked with open his own private practice. One of Beth’s experiences in the field, changed her path when she joined another practice and met a wonderful physician who invited her to join a medical mission to South America planned for the summer of 2007. She traveled with 4 others and Dr. Linda Carney to the Ucayali River, a tributary to the Amazon in Peru, where they lived in a boat for 16 days traveling from one village to the next holding daily clinics where they saw up to 90 patients a day. Beth played several roles while on the mission. She would take vital signs, chief complaints and translate for the physician; she even played the role of a pharmacist and set up a small pharmacy in the temporary clinics in villages and would fill the written prescriptions the doctor would hand the villagers after their visits. She also assisted a nurse practitioner student teach the children healthy hygiene by translating to Spanish & Quechuan. In 2008, Beth feels like she finally found her long desired home at the University of Texas School of Nursing Family Wellness Center. “After the medical mission it made me realize that working in a setting where I could make a miniature contribution to the community would be a very rewarding setting for me. This is why I feel that coming across and working at the wonderful Family Wellness Center where medical providers assist in providing primary health-care to uninsured low-income people of Austin and assist women with breast and cervical cancer screening exams at no cost, is my home”. “ I feel very fortunate to assist and work with such admired physicians as Dr. Lisa Doggett & Dr. Susan Dubois, whom I respect very much”. Beth wishes to fulfill a long lost dream of becoming a registered nurse by attending the University in the near future. She enjoys traveling to other countries and the outdoors with her husband Dan as well as spending play time with their 2 year old Pekinese, Peeks.
