AUSTIN, Texas — On April 30, 2011 at the Vestido Rojo (red dress) Health fair students from the School of Nursing at The University of Texas at Austin are making a difference among Hispanic women by promoting healthy life styles. Nursing students are prepared to reach and promote health among the increasing Hispanic population within a cultural and linguistic approach.

The School of Nursing at UT Austin is the leading nursing school in the nation that prepares nursing students to provide care to Hispanic people by including the Spanish for Health Care Professionals course in the academic curricula. Participation of nursing students that speak medical Spanish as part of their academic formation enhances community participation in health care and health promotion activities.

Students at School of Nursing are eager to serve their community and promote health. On April the 30th, once more nursing students will provide blood pressure screening to Hispanic women that have limited or no access to health care. The event is sponsored by the American Heart Association in collaboration with UT School of Pharmacy and UT Nursing School.

High blood pressure is considered a “silent killer” because it has no symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 75 million people have high blood pressure in the United States; about 25% American adults have prehypertension; one in three adults older than 20 years of age suffer from hypertension.

Blood pressure screenings on a regular basis is a very important intervention for health promotion and disease prevention by bringing awareness of this condition.  CDC data show that one in five adults have hypertension and are not aware of having this chronic disease. A healthy life style that includes physical activity, healthy eating, blood pressure screenings, quit smoking, maintain a normal body weight, and other recommendations are proved to keep a person from having high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, kidney disease.

The event will be held April 30th 2011at the Mexican American Cultural Center located at 600 River Street, Austin Texas, 78701. Blood pressure screening will be provided by nursing students from 8:00AM -9:30AM.
