Dr. Tracie Harrison, an associate professor in the School of Nursing at The University of Texas at Austin, has been selected to receive the 2012 Southern Nursing Research Society/John A. Hartford Foundation Geriatric Research Award.

The award is to be presented Feb. 24, 2012 at the society's annual conference in New Orleans.

The award recognizes the contributions of a researcher whose program of research has enhanced the science and practice of geriatric nursing in the southern United States.

Harrison's research is in age-related change and functional impairment and how that affects social role performance and subsequent health outcomes.

Her current research, funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Nursing Research, is an ethnographic investigation of reasons for health disparities in disablement outcomes among Mexican American women from 55- to 75-years-old with mobility impairments. She has observed and interviewed more than 120 women multiple times to understand how functional limitations are perceived to affect their lives.

She also is a 2011-2012 Health and Aging Policy Fellow through the Atlantic Philanthropies and is working with the federal Administration on Aging to enhance policies that affect older Americans with disabilities.
