Dr. Walker and doctoral candidates from
the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Mexico

It’s no secret that the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing is a world-class institution, attracting students from across the state and the nation. This attraction reached farther afield lately, as Lorraine Walker, professor of nursing at UT Austin School of Nursing, played host to seven doctoral candidates in nursing from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Mexico.

Doctoral nursing programs are relatively new in Mexico, and the one in Nuevo Leon is only seven years old, Linda Azucean Rodriguez Puente, one of the exchange students explained at a recent luncheon welcoming them. “We were particularly interested in visiting the UT Austin School of Nursing because we have all read Dr. Walker’s book Strategies for Theory Construction in Nursing and wanted to meet her,” she added.

Many critics say the book, which is a standard text at most schools and colleges of nursing, offers graduate students in nursing and related disciplines the clearest, most useful introduction to methods of theory development. It places nursing theory development in context, with a rich historical view that traces the field from its mid-20th century beginnings through contemporary and emerging issues.

“Hosting these students has been an honor for me and for the School of Nursing,” said Dr. Walker, who teaches global health. “I look at it as a two-way relationship and hope it’s something we can continue to do.”

Dr. Walker also thanked School of Nursing staff who worked to create the mechanism to help the exchange students adapt and get used to the differences and some of the difficulties they encountered, such as creating identification numbers to enable them to access wifi while on campus.

“These young people will one day be leaders in academics,” said Dr. Walker. “I believe it’s more important than ever that we reach out to help them become the best nursing leaders in Mexico.”

The exchange students were Linda Azucena Rodriguez Puente, Nora Angelica Armendariz Garcia, Edna Idalia Paulina Navarro Oliva, Jesica Guadalupe Ahumada Cortez, Mario Enrique Gamez Medina, Carolina Valdez Montero and Martha Dalila Mendez Ruiz.
