Children's Wellness Center

History

In 1995, the school district nurse for Del Valle ISD (DVISD) approached the School of Nursing for assistance with the complex health problems of the children in that area. This nurse was the only registered nurse working in the district at that time. After discussions about the health care needs of DVISD, the School of Nursing performed a needs assessment, gathering such information as health status, school attendance, health care resources, and other data from key community members. With initial funding from the Texas Department of Health (now Texas Department of State Health Services), the Children’s Wellness Center was opened in April 1996 as a primary health care site for children ages 0-21, who reside in Del Valle.

Mission

The mission of the Children's Wellness Center is to provide excellence in delivering pediatric primary care services in a clinical setting while enhancing nursing knowledge for undergraduate and graduate nursing students.

The Social Resource Center (SRC) provides additional services for the community such as food pantry, clothing, baby products, hygiene items, workspace with internet, and assistance with benefit applications.
