Congratulations to Our New AAN Fellows and Living Legend

Two UT Austin School of Nursing faculty members will be inducted into the 2019 class of fellows of the American Academy of NursingKaren Johnson, PhD, RN, associate professor; and Julie Zuñiga, PhD, RN, assistant professor, are among 231 highly distinguished nurse leaders to be inducted during the AAN policy conference in Washington, D.C., October 26, 2019.

Congratulations to Our New AANP Fellow

Cara Young, PhD, RN, FNP-C, assistant professor, was inducted into the Fellows of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP). Dr. Young is a family nurse practitioner, nurse researcher, and assistant professor. Her diverse program of research examines and seeks to improve behavioral and psychosocial transitions for vulnerable populations in the first half of the life course. Her primary line of research has focused on improving the mental health of children, adolescents and young adults through mindfulness-based interventions.

Incoming Graduate Students Receive Diversity Fellowships

Melissa Ibarra, Bachelor of Science in Psychology, UT El Paso ’16, and Mercedes Harris, Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, UT San Antonio ’17, were recently awarded fellowships by the UT Austin Graduate School. The two were nominated by the UT Austin School of Nursing after being accepted into the graduate program.

Faculty Members Selected for Induction into the Nursing Fellowship

Angie P. Clark, PhD, APRN, ACNS-BC, FAAN, FAHA, FCNS and associate professor emerita; and Heather Cuevas, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, FCNS and clinical assistant professor, were among the first class of fellows inducted into the Clinical Nurse Specialist Institute (CNSI) Fellowship.

Alumna Appointed to Endowed Chair

Professor Terry Badger, PhD (’86), RN, PMHCNS-BC, FAAN, recently was appointed to the Eleanor Bauwens Endowed Chair of Nursing at the University of Arizona College of Nursing in recognition of her accomplishments as a nationally recognized nurse-scientist and leader in graduate education.

School of Nursing Rises in NIH Ranking

The latest National Institutes of Health rankings of funding to schools of nursing have been released, and for fiscal year 2018 (funds awarded to the institution between October 1, 2017 and September 30, 2018) the UT Austin School of Nursing is ranked No. 15 in the nation among all schools of nursing and No. 8 among public schools of nursing. This achievement is particularly noteworthy in the context of a very competitive and challenging funding environment.

Former Student Receives Writing Award for Article Published in National Journal

Alumna Laura Cervantes, who received her Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner degree in May 2018, was selected as the winner of the 2019 Excellence in Writing Award by the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Health (AWHONN).

Valerie Danesh, PhD, RN, CCRP, CCRN-K and assistant professor, was notified that her team’s manuscript titled “Telehealth in mental health nursing education: Healthcare simulation with remote presence technology” has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services.
