Congratulations to Our New AAN Fellows

Three UT Austin School of Nursing faculty members will be inducted into the 2020 class of fellows of the American Academy of Nursing. Ashley Henneghan, PhD, RN, assistant professor, and Michelle Wright, PhD, RN, assistant professor, are among 230 distinguished nurse leaders to join the Academy.

Today we begin a new and novel academic year at The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing. We are fortunate to have our students back to start the next chapter of their nursing career, especially during a time when the need for nurses is at an all-time high. The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us all to recognize the contributions that nurses in a variety of roles make to protect the health of our communities. We are proud of the dedicated work our alumni, current students, and faculty have put forth in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While our country was still processing and mourning the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, we watched as George Floyd’s life was taken right before our eyes. We continue to grieve the losses of Mike Ramos, Philando Castile, Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice, and countless other black men, women, and children who have died at the hands of those who devalue human life. These traumatic events and resultant suffering are unfortunately not new to communities of color, and are symptoms of a deeper problem with which our nation has yet to grapple.

From the US Army to Texas Nursing: Engaging Students in Crisis Relief Mobilization

UT Austin School of Nursing clinical assistant professor Shalonda Horton is waiting on some important news. As a United States Army Reserve Public Health Nurse, she was notified on Friday, April 3rd that she needed to prepare for mobilization to assist the civilian population amid COVID-19. However, her orders have yet to come in, while some members of her unit, the 7454th Medical Battalion, have already been sent.
