Assisted Living Facility (ALF) Quality of Care Study

The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing has partnered with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to conduct a study of assisted living facility (ALF) residents. This study will focus on quality of care and quality of life in Texas ALF’s across the state. Representative administrators and residents from 300 urban/metro ALF’s as well as 150 ALF’s located in rural counties will be surveyed. In addition, the study will conduct a detailed policy and procedure review of a randomly selected subset of ALF’s to review key operational metrics, incident reporting, quality of life, consumer satisfaction, and medication use within these selected ALF’s. ALF visits will be coordinated with the HHSC long-term care ombudsmen to help ensure a high- quality outcome of the survey process. The survey data and other information collected will help HHSC track progress in current quality improvement activities and develop strategies for new initiatives to improve the quality of care and quality of life for residents of Texas assisted living facilities.

Goals of the Study

The ALF project has three main objectives:

To assess resident’s quality of care in the ALF.
Evaluate the residents’ satisfaction with the care they are provided.
To identify potential areas of improvement for HHSC to consider.

Seeking Data Collectors

The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing is currently seeking registered nurses, pharmacists or other degree holding individuals to assist with data collection for the study. Data collection consultants will receive training in the use of the data collection computer-assisted professional interviewing methods. Applicants must meet the following basic requirements among the full list of requirements that will be provided in a full list of responsibilities of the roles we are seeking to fill:

A four-year college degree
A current driver’s license and an automobile
Proof of auto liability insurance
Work experience within the last year
Preference will be given to registered nurses and licensed pharmacists
Preference will be given to candidates with experience working with the geriatric population or in a nursing facility
