The Hispanic Nursing Student Association (HNSA) is an official organization sponsored by the School of Nursing at The University of Texas at Austin. HNSA offers support and resources to students interested in pursuing a nursing degree. The purpose of HNSA is to promote academic, professional, and leadership skills by providing multiple social events, volunteering, and networking opportunities.

Mission

  • To address cultural health disparities and the shortage of nurses by increasing the number of minority students into nursing baccalaureate programs.
  • To prepare nursing students to excel in their academic career and leadership roles within the Hispanic community.

For over 10 years, HNSA has been initiating positive changes in the UT community and the School of Nursing. HNSA members have volunteered over 2,000 hours advocating and partnering in various health and education initiatives with organizations such as the American Heart Association, Con Mi Madre, Meals on Wheels and many more. HNSA prides in encouraging and advocating for community and cultural awareness so that all nursing students regardless of race or ethnicity can be successful in nursing school. We promote and enhance enriched learning experience for members to increase engagement, attainment, and preparation for the nursing profession. We provide academic support, professional development opportunities, and we work to foster a sense of community for our school’s ethnic minority population. HNSA provides academic and psychosocial support through activities such as facilitating guest lectureships, encouraging camaraderie and peer mentorship among HNSA members and alumni, promoting organizational leadership through training and skills development, and fostering interaction between students, faculty, and the community.

In addition, the Hispanic Nursing Student Association aims to strengthen our communities and create a safe and welcoming educational environment for all our students.
