Parking: Parking in the Trinity Garage (TRG) will be validated. Park on the 4th floor for entrance to Red River Street and bring your ticket into the School of Nursing for validation.

This training is conducted in two parts: Motivational Interviewing and Self-Care, and you can register for one or both parts.

Start the new year with renewed skills and tips to improve your own health while also enhancing the health of your clients.

Join The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing and Cardea for a free training on Motivational Interviewing and Self-Care! This training has been approved to provide CEUs to Promotores, Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Instructors of CHWs through Cardea. This training is supported through funding from Austin Public Health (Agreement No. 4700 NG190000021).

Motivational Interviewing Training (9:00 am – 1:00 pm)

Learn and practice the underlying philosophy and spirit of Motivational Interviewing that helps people want to make health-related behavior changes. You will also practice core skills to start a behavior change conversation that engages and empowers your clients to take next steps.

Competencies Covered

  • Total DSHS-Certified Hours – 4 for Promotores, CHWs; CHW Instructors
  • Interpsersonal – 2
  • Capacity-Building – 1.5
  • Teaching – 0.5

Presented by: Jacklyn Hecht, RN, MSN, CHWI, is Managing Director of several research projects at UT Austin School of Nursing. Ms. Hecht has conducted MI training workshops throughout the world and has been an active member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers since 1998.

Self-Care Training (1:00 pm – 4:00 pm)

Learn how to apply these MI skills to yourself, while gaining knowledge and tools to develop your own self-care plan to reduce stress and maintain better health and well-being.

Presented by: La'Toya Swan, BS, CHES, CHWI, is a Training Manager for Cardea. La’Toya has an extensive background in HIV/AIDS education/advocacy spanning 26 years. Her career journey has allowed her to excel in the nonprofit sector with a focus in program management, program coordination and community event planning.
