Dr. Eileen Lake, a nurse and sociologist, is a leading expert in nursing systems research. For nearly three decades, she has examined hospitals as complex organizations, focusing on nurse staffing, the work environment and how they relate to safety, quality of care, and patient outcomes. She developed and oversees the Partnership for Quality Measurement–endorsed Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, translated into 23 languages and used worldwide to show that supportive work environments lead to higher‑quality care. Much of her work has linked nursing factors to outcomes for very low‑birth‑weight infants and now extends to obstetric outcomes and disparities. She is also evaluating Scotland’s 2024 Safe Staffing Law and studying nursing factors in Malaysian university hospitals. Dr. Lake serves as Associate Director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research and is Co‑PI of the long‑standing T32 “Advanced Training in Nursing Outcomes Research” which accelerates BSN‑to‑PhD training.
