Dr. Connie Ulrich is a nurse bioethicist and the Lillian S. Brunner Endowed Chair at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, where she is a Professor of Nursing and Medical Ethics and Health Policy. She also holds a secondary appointment in Penn’s School of Medicine. A pioneer in nursing ethics, she was the first nurse postdoctoral fellow in bioethics at the NIH. Her research explores the ethical dimensions of clinical and research practice, focusing on professional agency, informed consent, and outcomes of care. She has received NIH and AHRQ funding to study ethical challenges, including moral distress in nurses and cancer clinical trial participation. Internationally, she leads bioethics initiatives in Tanzania. Her book Moral Distress in the Professions highlights ethical challenges in healthcare. A fellow of AAN, Hastings Center, and Sigma Theta Tau, she continues to shape bioethics scholarship for future clinicians and the public.
