Dr. Helen Erickson earned a Diploma degree in 1957, her BSN in 1974 and her MS(N) in 1976 from The University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN), and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology (1984) also from The University of Michigan.
As a faculty member of The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing, Dr. Erickson served as Chair of Holistic Adult Health Division and Special Assistant to the Dean, Graduate Studies. The Helen L. Erickson Lectureship in Holistic Nursing is an endowed lectureship held bi-annually in her honor at UT Austin.
Her long career in clinical practice and nursing education has provided a number of important contributions to the field. Chief among these contributions has been the theory and practice of holistic nursing, which takes a “mind-body-spirit-emotion-environment approach to the practice of nursing.”
