
Barbara Espinosa, medical assistant at The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing’s Children’s Wellness Center, received the SON Star Award for Texas Nursing staff in May 2025.
This award is granted to a UT Austin School of Nursing staff member who demonstrates a commitment to the goals and values of the University and the School.
Espinosa was recognized for her outstanding service, compassion and dedication to patient care. With more than 30 years in the medical assistant profession—and 12 of those years serving in the School of Nursing clinics—Barbara has become a beloved and essential member of the team.
Known for her warmth, professionalism and exceptional skill, Espinosa has touched the lives of countless patients and families. Her special ability to ease the fears of young patients has made clinic visits less intimidating and more comforting for many children. Colleagues describe her as a role model and mentor whose work ethic and kindness inspire everyone around her.
Her legacy goes far beyond her clinical work. She has shaped the professional journeys of many students and fellow health care providers, leading by example with compassion and resilience. Whether it's her infectious laughter or her tireless dedication, she leaves a lasting impression on everyone she meets.
