Community Climate and Care Committee’s Efforts Centered Around Undoing Racism

While our country was still processing and mourning the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, we watched as George Floyd’s life was taken right before our eyes. We continue to grieve the losses of Mike Ramos, Philando Castile, Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice, and countless other black men, women, and children who have died at the hands of those who devalue human life. These traumatic events and resultant suffering are unfortunately not new to communities of color, and are symptoms of a deeper problem with which our nation has yet to grapple.

Community Climate and Care: Movie Night

The purpose of our Movie Night is to bring together students, faculty, staff, and the broader community on and off campus to view and discuss a film that examines some aspect of race and racism. Movie night is co-hosted annually, usually in the spring semester, by the Community Climate and Care Committee and Nurses for Racial Justice (a student organization).

School of Nursing Community Members Participate in Anti-Racism Training

On January 15th and 16th, 20 faculty, 7 staff members and 5 students from The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing participated in anti-racism training, described as “A Groundwater Analysis of Racial Inequities”. The training was conducted by undoing racism consultant, Joyce James who has worked for over three decades to address systemic factors that hinder racial fairness and impartiality in child and family serving systems.
