Speakers
Keynote Speaker: Nancy Krieger, PhD
Professor of Social Epidemiology, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
Nancy Krieger is Professor of Social Epidemiology, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Director of the HSPH Interdisciplinary Concentration on Women, Gender, and Health.
Dr. Krieger’s work addresses three topics: (1) conceptual frameworks to understand, analyze, and improve the people’s health, including the ecosocial theory of disease distribution she first proposed in 1994 and its focus on embodiment and equity; (2) etiologic research on societal determinants of population health and health inequities; and (3) methodologic research on improving monitoring of health inequities.
Jewel Mullen, MD, MPH
Associate Dean for Health Equity and Associate Professor, UT Austin Dell Medical School
Jewel Mullen is the associate dean for health equity at the Dell Medical School, as well as an associate professor in the school’s population health and internal medicine departments. She also serves as a senior consultant for Ascension Seton to help meet health equity goals across its system.
Dr. Mullen's career has spanned clinical, research, teaching and administrative roles focused on improving the health of all people, especially those who are underserved. She is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in building effective community-based chronic disease prevention programs and for her commitment to improving individual and population health by strengthening coordination between community, public health and health care systems.
Alexandra García, PhD, RN, FAAN
Professor, UT Austin School of Nursing and UT Austin Dell Medical School
Alexandra García is a professor in the Family and Public Health Nursing and Nursing Administration Division in The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing and the inaugural director of community engagement and health equity for the Department of Population Health at Dell Medical School, with dual appointments in both schools of nursing and medicine.
Dr. García's research focuses on social, cultural and economic influences on health promotion practices, diabetes-related symptoms, self-management strategies, mental health and quality of life. She previously directed the faculty-led study abroad programs to Guadalajara in Mexico and Heredia in Costa Rica and is now collaborating with Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya, on education and research projects.
Shetal Vohra-Gupta, PhD, MSW
Assistant Professor, UT Austin Steve Hicks Schools of Social Work
Shetal Vohra-Gupta, Ph.D., MSW is an Assistant Professor at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Vohra-Gupta is particularly interested in analyzing social and health policies and how they positively and negatively influence the social determinants of health. She is also co-leading a research study examining sexual assault kits in the city of Austin and through this work conducting policy research around the determinants of violence. In addition, she is working collaboratively to analyze social and health policies around neighborhood poverty and its influence on birth outcomes in black and white women.
Karen Johnson, PhD, RN, FSAHM, FAAN
Associate Professor, UT Austin School of Nursing
Karen Johnson is an associate professor, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar Alumna (2014 cohort), and a Fellow in the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine and the American Academy of Nursing.
Dr. Johnson's researcher focuses on the social determinants of health, health and social disparities experienced by youth from historically marginalized group, health in alternative high schools that serve students at-risk for school dropout, surveillance and secondary analyses of large epidemiological data sets that track health-risk behaviors and risk/protective factors among adolescents, and addressing health-risk behaviors and mental health during sports physicals, particularly for youth from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.
