Carolyn Phillips, PhD, RN, ACNP, AOCNP, assistant professor at The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing, has been recognized as one of the Texas Nurses Association’s (TNA) Outstanding Texas Nurses for 2025.

Each year, TNA honors 25 Outstanding Texas Nurses whose dedication and leadership elevate the nursing profession across the state. These exemplary registered nurses are recognized for fostering a culture of care, advancing health and wellness, driving innovation and making meaningful contributions to their communities.

Phillips is an experienced oncology nurse with over 20 years in roles spanning bedside care, advanced practice, education and leadership. Her clinical and research focus centers on oncology and end-of-life care, with a particular interest in how grief and trauma affect the brain and immune system. Currently, her research explores how storytelling through music can support caregivers by enhancing brain connectivity and emotional-cognitive alignment, ultimately improving outcomes related to grief and well-being.

As both a nurse and performing musician, she brings a unique perspective to developing expressive arts-based interventions that promote healing through narrative, music and storytelling.

The TNA award is a testament to Phillips's dedication to the nursing profession and her influential role in shaping the future of health care in Texas. Her recognition not only honors her accomplishments but also highlights the quality of professionals within the UT Austin School of Nursing.
