Major Shannan Smith, a flight nurse with the 183rd Aeromedical Squadron, Jackson Mississippi, prepares for medical airlift evacuation training in Gulfport, Mississippi, July 20, 2023.

Meet Shannan (Willman) Smith, a 1994 BSN alumna, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, and major in the USAF Air National Guard, where she has served as a flight nurse since 2020—returning to the Armed Forces after previously serving from 1995 to 1999.

Her nursing career has also included roles as a neonatal intensive care unit nurse, childbirth instructor and volunteering for church missions and Girl Scouts events.

Smith said her experience at The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing helped prepare her to be a lifelong learner and to urge others to do the same.

“In our profession, new information comes out almost daily,” Smith said. “Be willing to ask for help when you need it, and don’t hesitate to ask a more experienced nurse. It amazes me what I still learn from new nurses.”

Smith says she’s especially proud of her military service and the opportunities it provides to help servicemembers who may need mental health support themselves.

“I’m just doing what I was meant to do,” she added. “It’s a great heritage to be a part of.”

From her nomination:

“Shannan was a NICU nurse for many years—in the Air Force, then in civilian hospitals. During her time working in the civilian hospitals, she maintained her Air Force Reserve status, and pursued a degree as a Psychiatric NP. All of this while raising two daughters. She was also president of The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing Alumni Network. Her accomplishments are truly impressive and inspiring.”

We honor Shannan during National Nurses Week for encouraging nurses to learn and teach at every opportunity.
