Meet Davie Johnson, MSN ‘77, RN, who has focused her nursing career on advocating for older adults and has made significant strides in gerontological education and healthcare.
Johnson’s efforts to support older adults have been recognized by the City of El Paso, the Texas House of Representatives, the Texas Senate, and the United State Congress.
She has also taught fall prevention classes for University Medical Center of El Paso Foundation, and is a proud member of the Texas Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.
Most recently, she worked with the El Paso County Judge and Commissioners Court to pass a resolution supporting the establishment of an accredited Geriatric Emergency Department and accredited Geriatric Specialty Clinic at University Medical Center of El Paso, which was passed on December 18, 2023.
“I’m really proud of working for our community to help serve older adults,” Johnson said. “We don’t have enough people advocating for older adults and people with disabilities. I hope that nurses, physicians, and other allied health professionals will be touched enough to see us as people.”
Now in her 90s, she will join the Texas Silver Haired Legislature in July 2025, continuing her legacy of advocacy and leadership in care of the older adult.
Johnson was nominated by her daughter, Patricia, who said:
“At 95 years young, my mother exemplifies the spirit of nursing and remains a beacon of hope and support for our community of older adults. Her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others truly deserves recognition.”
We honor Johnson during National Nurses Week for her dedication to helping practitioners understand the unique health care challenges of older adults.
