Meet Mary Loeb, a 2022 BSN honors graduate. Ms. Loeb comes from a long line of Longhorns, beginning with her great grandmother who graduated from the UT College of Pharmacy in 1929, making her a fourth generation Longhorn!

Ms. Loeb is currently a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse at St. David’s Medical Center and a member of their new graduate residency program. “This has been my dream for as long as I can remember! I knew from a young age that I wanted to become a NICU nurse because of a near tragedy involving my little brother. He was born with a heart defect that nearly cost him his life.” After seeing the lifelong impact that her brother’s health care team had on him and her family, she has aspired to care for neonates and their families by advocating for, and providing them with, the most patient- and family-centered care possible.

During her time at UT, Mary was a member of the Global Medical Brigades, a non-profit that implements health, economic and education initiatives around the world. “I traveled to Ghana, Africa in January of 2020 and worked alongside underserved communities to provide more sustainable access to health care. In addition, we worked to empower our patients to take their health into their own hands by providing health education.” This experience had such a significant impact on Ms. Loeb that she decided to used it as the focus of her nursing Honors Program research paper and had the opportunity to present her findings at the St. David’s Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research in Underserved Populations (CHPR) Conference in March of 2022.

In addition to her current position in the neonatal ICU, Mary has worked at Camp Balcones Springs as a Nurse Assistant for the last two summers. “This job afforded me the perfect combination of keeping up with my nursing knowledge and skills while also having fun and connecting with the campers to give them the best summer camp experience possible.” Ms. Loeb is looking forward to continue working with this camp in future summers, however, this time as a Registered Nurse!

“My ultimate goal is to attend graduate school to become a Nurse Practitioner, but more than that, I want to give being a NICU nurse all of my effort so that I can give those sweet babies the best chance at a long and healthy life.

We honor Mary Loeb for her dedication to caring for the youngest members of our community, and for ensuring that our next generation is afforded the highest quality of life.
