School of Nursing Honors 9 Faculty Members with Dean’s Excellence Awards

The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing is proud to announce the recipients of the 2024–2025 Dean’s Excellence Awards. These prestigious awards recognize exceptional faculty members whose contributions advance the School’s mission of excellence in nursing education, research, service and global engagement.

Each year, the Dean’s Excellence Awards honor faculty across key categories, including research and quality improvement, teaching innovation, service, scholarship, mentoring and global community nursing.

Veronica Walker, PhD, RN, clinical assistant professor, and Whitney Thurman, PhD, RN, assistant professor, received the Dean’s Excellence Awards in Research and Quality Improvement.

Shalonda Horton, PhD, MSN, BSN, clinical assistant professor, and Sharon Horner, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor, received the Dean’s Excellence Awards in Service.

Amanda Alvarado, DNP, CPNP-AC, RN-C, clinical assistant professor, and Shelli Kesler, PhD, Dr. Mary Louise Adams Endowed Professorship in Oncology Nursing, received the Dean’s Excellence Awards in Teaching Innovation.

Carolyn Phillips, PhD, RN, ACNP, AOCNP, assistant professor, received the Dean’s Excellence Award in Scholarship. 

Cara Young, PhD, RN, FNP-C, FAANP, FAAN, associate professor, received the Dean’s Excellence Award in Mentoring. 

Ana Todd, PhD, RN, clinical assistant professor, received the Dean’s Excellence Award in Global Community Nursing.
