The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing Associate Dean for Research Kavita Radhakrishnan, PhD, MSEE, RN, FAAN, FAHA, and her publication team including, UT Austin School of Information PhD student Rachel Tunis, School of Nursing PhD students and T32 Scholars Emily West, MA, and Namuun Clifford, MSN, RN, FNP-C; and School of Nursing Professor Sharon Horner, PhD, RN, FAAN, published an article in Nursing Outlook, a premier nursing journal.

The article “Leveraging digital health technologies in heart failure self-care interventions to improve health equity” is based on a presentation Radhakrishnan delivered at the Biosocial Methods to Advance Health Equity Conference hosted by the Council for Advancement of Nursing Science in September 2023.

The study highlights the importance of self-care for heart failure patients and the challenge of ensuring adherence to these practices. It explores the potential of digital health interventions to enhance self-care and improve health outcomes. However, it also acknowledges the risk of these interventions exacerbating health inequities if not carefully implemented. Radhakrishnan uses a digital health equity framework to examine these challenges and opportunities, drawing on their experience with a decentralized clinical trial involving sensors and apps to boost self-care adherence.
