In July 2025, The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing hosted 14 visiting nursing scholars and faculty from Hungkuang University in Taiwan for a vibrant two-week educational and cultural exchange.

Coordinated in partnership with Texas Global and supported by the UT Austin School of Nursing’s Center for Global Nursing and Health (CGNH), the visit exemplified the power of international collaboration in advancing culturally responsive health care education.

This visit was possible thanks to several members of the Nursing community: Julie Zuñiga, PhD, RN, FAAN, former interim center director and Associate Professor; Alex Garcia, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor; Linda Kim, PhD, MSN, RN, PHN, CPHQ, CGNC, Director of CGNH and Associate Professor; Li-Chen Lin, PhD, RN, CNRN, Clinical Assistant Professor; Merci Paulhill, PhD student; and Martha Thomas, now-former Administrative Assistant for CGNH.

Throughout the visit, students participated in a wide range of immersive activities—from disaster preparedness simulations and hands-on clinical skills training in the School of Nursing’s state-of-the-art simulation labs to thoughtful discussions on global health and health policy.

The scholars also had the opportunity to explore Austin’s health care landscape through tours of local facilities and gave back to the community by volunteering at the Central Texas Food Bank.

Beyond academics, the exchange offered meaningful cultural experiences that deepened mutual understanding and built lasting connections. The group toured the Texas State Capitol, visited the Blanton Museum of Art and experienced local cuisine and community through outings and social events hosted by student ambassadors and faculty.

This partnership between the School of Nursing and Hungkuang University highlights the transformative impact of global engagement. By opening doors to cross-cultural learning and collaboration, the program helps shape compassionate, forward-thinking nursing leaders who are prepared to make a difference around the world.
