The AI in Nursing and Health Care Certificate program is a 9-credit-hour, online certificate equipping nurses and health care professionals with AI skills for patient care, workflow efficiency, and health care leadership.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of basic AI concepts through real-world applications in nursing and health care practice.
  2. Critically evaluate the benefits, challenges, and best practices of AI applications in nursing and health care.
  3. Utilize strategies to stay current with emerging AI technologies.
  4. Discuss ethical, legal, and regulatory considerations to promote ethical, accountable, and patient-centered AI adoption in nursing and health care.
  5. Create action plans for integrating AI solutions into nursing and health care practice (e.g., nursing workflow, education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and quality improvement efforts).

The certificate consists of three courses (9 credit hours), each delivered in a fully online format:

  • N395: AI-Powered Clinical Decision Support
  • N395: AI-Assisted Documentation and Workflow Optimization in Health Care

Admission Requirements

All students interested in applying for graduate study in The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing must meet the admission requirements established by the University’s Graduate School and the School of Nursing. Applicants are expected to be graduates of accredited colleges or universities. Below are the minimum requirements for admission.

  1. Degree: A BSN degree or an associate degree in nursing and a baccalaureate degree outside of nursing or a health-care related bachelor’s degree.
  2. GPA: 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or comparable GPA in upper-division work (junior- and senior-level courses) and any graduate work completed
  3. Recommendations: 1 required
  4. Statement of Purpose
  5. Curriculum Vitae/resume

Application Procedures

Applicants must complete the online application using the Graduate School Application for Admission. The online application is data entry only. All supporting application documents are uploaded on the My Status page after the application is paid and submitted.

*Recommendation: Complete online application, as early as possible. This allows time for all required documents to be completed and uploaded by the deadline.

  5. Recommendations: 1 required / 1 maximum
    1. Using our secure, personalized form, one (1) professional recommendation that attests to the applicant's academic ability, professional competency, and personal character must be submitted electronically by the recommender.
    2. Written recommendations are not accepted.
  6. Official TOEFL scores taken within the past two years (for International Applicants only).

All materials are to be submitted electronically to the My Status Check (available approximately two days after online application submission) after completion of the Graduate School Application for Admission.

Acceptance to Graduate Programs in Nursing

The School of Nursing Admission committee begins reviews after each of the application deadlines. All application materials are required to be submitted by the program’s application deadline; files that remain incomplete will not be reviewed or acted upon by the committee.

Applicants will be notified of the admission decision by June. Decisions are communicated in the following ways:

  1. Admission offers are sent via email by the School of Nursing.
  2. Official admission decision e-letters from the Graduate Admissions Office are available on the application Status Check page.

Acceptance by both the School of Nursing and the Office of Graduate Studies is necessary before enrollment is permitted.
