Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program prepares advance practice registered nurses (APRNs) to practice as FNPs in community primary care settings. In this 70-credit hour program, students complete a minimum of 840 hours of supervised clinical practice with nurse practitioners and primary care physicians who work in primary and specialty care settings. Within the APRN DNP program, students have the opportunity to tailor their educational experiences to meet individual student goals and program objectives.
FNP applicants must have at least two years of full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse (RN) by the first date of program enrollment and have the following educational preparation:
- Hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, or
- Hold a non-nursing baccalaureate degree and an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Nursing Diploma (ND).
FNP Focus
- Prepares graduates to provide holistic, comprehensive, person-centered care across the lifespan.
- Emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention, risk reduction, and community and population health.
- Focuses on the evidence-based diagnosis and management of acute illnesses and chronic medical conditions.
- Equips graduates to lead in today’s complex and ever-changing health care environment.
- Promotes a commitment to improving health within communities and populations.
- Encourages collaborative practice with other disciplines to improve outcomes and transform care.
Certification & Licensure
- Graduates are eligible to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) exam and American Academy for Nurse Practitioner (AANP) certification examinations for the family nurse practitioner.
- The program meets the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty's curriculum guidelines.
- The curriculum also includes coursework required by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners (TxBON) to be qualified as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
