Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
As leaders in mental health care, PMHNP graduates will be prepared to provide mental health care to individuals and families throughout the lifespan. Graduates are equipped to practice in both inpatient and community based psychiatric/mental health settings providing psychiatric-mental health care and consultation services.
PMHNP Focus
- Assess, diagnose, and manage psychiatric and mental health disorders
 - Provide medication management and psychotherapeutic interventions (individual, group, and family)
 - Promote health and prevent illness across the lifespan
 - Apply research to improve patient care and healthcare systems
 - Work in inpatient, outpatient, and community-based mental health settings
 - Serve as a consultant and leader in psychiatric-mental health care
 
PMHNP Competencies
- Integrates psychopharmacologic management with evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches
 - Promotes mental health and prevents illness across all stages of life
 - Utilizes research findings to enhance patient outcomes through both individual and system-level interventions
 - Provides care in inpatient, outpatient, and community-based mental health and integrated health settings
 - Functions as a consultant to interdisciplinary teams and community partners
 
Certification & Licensure
- Graduates are eligible to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification examinations for the family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.
 - The program meets the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty's curriculum guidelines.
 - The curriculum includes coursework required by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners (TxBON) to be qualified as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
